How to Identify a Bed Bug
An adult bed bug is a small, brown to reddish-brown, wingless insect with a broad oval abdomen and a body that is flattened from top to bottom before feeding. Adults are commonly about 5–7 mm long. The head is short, the antennae are visible, and the abdomen shows distinct horizontal segments. A recently fed individual may look darker, longer, and more swollen.

- Estimate length with a ruler, coin, or other scale reference without touching the insect.
- Record whether the specimen is pale and very small, flat and brown, or darker and swollen after feeding.
Magnified photographs make bed bugs appear much larger than they are. Always record real-world size.
Adult Bed Bugs, Nymphs and Eggs
A reproducing bed bug population can contain adults, five progressively larger nymph stages, pale eggs, and empty cast skins. Nymphs have the same basic body form as adults but are smaller and often paler, especially before feeding. Eggs are tiny, pale, and easy to confuse with debris unless shape, attachment, and location are visible.
Adult
Brown to reddish-brown, broad and oval, visibly segmented, wingless, and commonly around 5–7 mm long before or after a blood meal changes its shape.

The strongest evidence is a live or dead bed bug supported by signs in the same protected area. Dark faecal spots, rusty stains, pale eggs, empty eggshells, and cast nymph skins can support identification when their shape and scale are clear. Any one sign on its own can be confused with unrelated dirt, stains, or another insect.
Where Bed Bugs Hide
Bed bugs usually shelter in narrow protected places near where a person sleeps or remains still for extended periods. Begin with mattress piping and seams, the bed frame and headboard, then inspect nearby furniture joints, upholstered seams, skirting gaps, and protected edges. Evidence farther from a bed may occur, but the room context remains important.
Mattress and base
Check piping, labels, folds, buttons, underside edges, and joints in a box spring or mattress base.
Bed frame and headboard
Inspect screw holes, joins, cracks, brackets, the wall-facing side, and protected contact points.
Upholstered furniture
Look along sofa and chair seams, under cushions, around staples, and inside protected frame joints.
Nearby edges and objects
Check skirting gaps, carpet edges, bedside furniture joints, picture frames, and other narrow shelters close to resting areas.
Identification limit
Can Bed Bug Bites Confirm an Infestation?
No. Skin reactions vary between people, may appear after a delay, and can resemble reactions caused by mosquitoes, fleas, other arthropods, or non-insect irritants. CDC identification guidance states that an inflammatory reaction is not diagnostic for bed bugs. Confirmation should focus on identifying adults or nymphs and matching physical evidence near the suspected resting area.
- A line or cluster of marks is not unique to bed bugs.
- Two people sharing a room can show different or no visible reactions.
- The time when a mark appears does not reliably identify the insect responsible.
- Do not use a skin photograph as the only evidence for a pest-control decision.

Insects Commonly Mistaken for Bed Bugs
Carpet beetle larvae and adults, booklice, small cockroach nymphs, ticks, fleas, and other small household arthropods can be mistaken for bed bugs in photographs. Bat bugs and some related cimicids can look extremely similar and may require close microscopic features plus information about birds or bats around the structure.
- Carpet beetle larvae are elongated and visibly hairy rather than broad, flat, and oval.
- Fleas are laterally compressed and have enlarged hind legs adapted for jumping.
- Ticks have eight legs as nymphs or adults and no antennae; bed bugs are insects with six legs and antennae.
- Small cockroach nymphs usually have a longer body outline and much longer antennae relative to the body.
- Bat bugs can be nearly indistinguishable in ordinary photos, so host location and expert examination may be needed.
What to Photograph for Bed Bug Identification
A useful identification set shows the specimen, its scale, and the exact context. Take one sharp close photograph from above, one photograph beside a ruler or coin, and a wider view of the seam, joint, furniture edge, or room location. Photograph separate signs without wiping or rearranging them first.

Do not touch or crush an unknown insect with bare hands. If a specimen is already contained, keep it sealed and do not move unsealed bedding or furniture through the property for a photograph.
