What Do Adult Mosquitoes and Their Larvae Look Like?
Adult mosquitoes have the basic fly body plan but are usually recognized by their narrow body, long legs, scaled wings and prominent proboscis. Larvae live in water and move actively through it; they look very different from adults. Colour and markings can help with a clear specimen, but species-level identification often needs microscopic characters and local surveillance data.

Which Clues Support Mosquito Identification?
The strongest evidence combines an intact adult, repeated biting or resting activity and an aquatic developmental source. Check whether insects appear at predictable times, enter through screens or gaps, rest in shaded areas or emerge near water-holding containers. One skin reaction, one distant insect or one container of moving larvae is not enough for a species conclusion.
Where Should You Look for Mosquito Breeding Clues?
Inspect accessible items that retain water: buckets, plant saucers, open storage containers, neglected drains, gutters, tarps and discarded objects. Also record standing water in shared or inaccessible areas without entering unsafe spaces. Different mosquito groups use different habitats, so the presence of water is a lead for inspection rather than proof of a particular species.
Balconies and courtyards
Check plant saucers, buckets, toys, covers and any object that repeatedly holds rain or irrigation water.
Roof and drainage edges
Document blocked gutters, drain channels and pooled water only from a safely accessible position.
Utility and shared spaces
Record water in basements, service areas or shared grounds and notify the responsible property party when access is controlled.
Inside the property
Check open containers, flower-vase water and likely entry routes, but do not assume every indoor adult developed indoors.
Common lookalikes
Is It a Mosquito, Midge or Fungus Gnat?
Non-biting midges and fungus gnats can look mosquito-like because they are small, slender flies with long legs. Fungus gnats usually concentrate around damp potting media. Midges often gather near water or lights but lack the same biting mouthpart. Crane flies are much larger. A sharp side view and exact activity location are more reliable than the general silhouette.
Fungus gnat
Usually a tiny, delicate dark fly linked to damp potting mix and indoor plants; it does not use skin bites as a developmental source.
Non-biting midge
Can resemble a mosquito and gather near water or lights; mouthparts and fine wing details may need close examination.
Crane fly
A much larger, very long-legged fly that is often called a giant mosquito but is a different fly group.
Do not infer a disease risk or mosquito species from a distant photograph. Health questions require appropriate medical or public-health advice.
What Should You Photograph?
Photograph one intact adult with scale, the body from above and the side, and the exact place where it was found. If larvae are present, record them moving in the original water and photograph the container and surrounding area. Add the date, time, approximate number, biting activity and whether water persists after rain or irrigation.

When Mosquito Evidence Requires More Than Identification
Mosquito identification cannot diagnose an illness or determine whether an individual insect carries a pathogen. Use sensible bite prevention and seek medical advice for concerning symptoms after a bite. Do not mix pesticides, apply agricultural products indoors or treat shared water without permission. Standing water linked to plumbing, drainage or public space may require the responsible specialist or authority.
- Follow the label for any registered repellent or pest product and keep it away from children and animals as directed.
- Do not mix insecticides, bleach, oils or improvised treatments.
- Do not climb onto roofs or enter unsafe drainage, utility or confined spaces to collect a photograph.
- Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, fainting or other severe symptoms.
- A high number of mosquitoes or public-health concern should be discussed with the appropriate local authority.
