What should you do when ants appear indoors?
Observe the active ants before removing them. Record where the trail begins, where it ends, what attracts it and whether activity changes by time of day. Then clean accessible food and spills, correct moisture where possible, and seal a confirmed entry point only when doing so will not trap activity inside an inaccessible void.
- 1
Photograph several ants clearly and include a scale reference when it is safe.
- 2
Follow the trail toward food, moisture, a crack, pipe route, window or exterior access point.
- 3
Store food in sealed containers and remove crumbs, grease, pet food and waste.
- 4
Check sinks, pipework, condensation, plant pots and other persistent moisture sources.
- 5
Record whether winged ants, sawdust-like material or activity from a wall void is present.
Which conditions attract ants indoors?
Different ants prefer different foods and nesting conditions, so the attractant may be sugar, grease, protein, water or protected shelter. Kitchens and bathrooms are common locations, but trails may also follow electrical wires, pipes and structural edges. One clean surface does not rule out a hidden source elsewhere along the route.
Food
Crumbs, grease, sweet residue, open packaging, pet food and poorly managed waste can support repeat foraging.
Water
Leaks, condensation, wet plant media and moisture around pipes can remain attractive after visible food is removed.
Access
Small openings around services, doors, windows and joints allow workers to move between outdoor or hidden nests and indoor resources.
Shelter
Wall voids, warm equipment zones, decayed wood and protected outdoor areas may support nesting, depending on the ant.
What do winged or flying ants in the house mean?
Winged ants are reproductive ants, but their presence does not identify the species or prove where the colony is located. Compare elbowed antennae, a constricted waist and unequal wing pairs with the straighter antennae, broader waist and more equal wings associated with termites. A clear specimen is important because treatment and building implications differ.
- Photograph the whole insect from above and the side, including antennae, waist and wings.
- Record whether several insects emerged from one crack, window, wall void or wooden element.
- Do not identify a termite or carpenter ant from colour or wings alone.
- Keep a safely collected specimen for closer identification when possible.
Which household steps help, and what should you avoid?
Sanitation, moisture correction, monitoring and exclusion can reduce the conditions that support indoor foraging. Killing only the visible workers may provide temporary relief without affecting the colony. Do not mix chemicals, apply outdoor products indoors, spray food-contact areas contrary to a label or place pesticides where children or animals can access them.
- Clean trails and spills after recording the route and likely entry point.
- Use sealed food storage and clean waste containers regularly.
- Repair accessible leaks and reduce persistent moisture.
- Seal confirmed gaps with a material appropriate to the surface and building service.
- If a pesticide is considered, use only a product labelled for the pest, location and application, and follow every label instruction.
A bait, spot treatment or another method is selected according to the ant, colony access, property and label. No one method is promised for every request.
When is professional ant control appropriate?
Professional assessment is appropriate when trails return after food and water are managed, ants emerge from inaccessible voids, winged insects appear indoors, several rooms or connected units are involved, or the species remains uncertain. Share the trail locations, activity time, photographs, moisture conditions and every product already used.
Recurring trails
Repeat activity can indicate that the colony, entry route or attractive source remains beyond the visible workers.
Hidden activity
Movement from walls, floors, service shafts or fixed equipment may require a property-specific inspection.
Uncertain identification
Very small ants, winged ants and termite look-alikes should be identified before a treatment plan is selected.
Quote boundary
Suitable basic ant disinsection for a property up to 60 m² starts at 200 GEL; complexity, distribution, access and scope determine the final quote.
