How to Recognize an Ant
Adult ants have six legs, a distinct head, a middle body section and an abdomen joined through a narrow waist. Their antennae are characteristically elbowed. Most ants noticed around a property are wingless workers, while reproductive males and queens may have wings. Species identification requires more detail, including worker size, waist nodes, body profile, hairs and antenna structure.

- Look for antennae with a clear bend rather than straight, bead-like antennae.
- Check for a pinched waist between the middle body section and abdomen.
- Photograph one whole insect from above and from the side with a millimetre scale.
- Record whether the ants are all similar in size or include noticeably larger and smaller workers.
- Do not use black, brown, red or yellow colour alone to name the species.

Signs of Ant Activity in a House or Apartment
Repeated worker trails are stronger evidence than one isolated insect. Check where the route begins and ends, whether ants gather around food, water or plants, and whether activity returns at a similar time. Small piles of soil or debris, ants emerging from a gap, or winged ants appearing indoors can add context, but none of these signs identifies the species by itself.

Flying Ants or Winged Termites?
A winged ant typically has elbowed antennae, a narrow waist and front wings longer than the hind wings. A winged termite has straighter antennae, a broad waist and two pairs of wings of similar length. Photograph the intact insect before sweeping it away, including the wings and antennae. Do not identify either group from loose wings alone when body evidence is missing.

Termite: broad connection without a pinch.

Ant: front wings usually longer than hind wings.

If winged insects emerge repeatedly from a wall, floor or frame, keep a specimen and document the exact emergence point instead of relying on a quick visual guess.
Where to Look for Ant Evidence
Follow activity without blocking or spraying the trail before it is documented. In kitchens, check food storage, counters, appliance edges, waste and pipe routes. In other rooms, inspect bathrooms, planters, window frames, balconies, wall-floor junctions and utility penetrations. Outdoors, record trails along foundations, paving, soil, vegetation and branches touching the building.

Photograph trails around cupboards, worktops, appliances, pet bowls, waste and any food source attracting workers.
Water and damp areas
Check sinks, bathrooms, pipe penetrations, condensation points and damp finishes while also documenting any maintenance issue.
Windows, balconies and plants
Trace movement between planters, vegetation, frames, façade joints and the interior route.
Exterior foundations and paving
Look for soil openings, trails beneath edges or objects, and routes from vegetation toward the building.
What to Photograph for Ant Identification
A useful evidence set combines a sharp whole-body image, a scale reference and wider photographs of the trail and entry point. Add the room, date, time, approximate number of ants and what they were approaching. If winged ants are present, include intact antennae, waist and both wing pairs. Preserve one specimen safely when a photograph cannot show the required structures.

Do not handle an unknown ant that is biting or stinging. Use a closed clear container only when collection can be done without direct contact.

Why Exact Ant Species May Require a Specimen
Many household ants share similar colours and body sizes. Reliable species identification can depend on the number and visibility of waist nodes, thorax shape, hairs, spines and antenna segments. These details may not appear in a distant or blurred photograph. Location and trail behaviour help the review, but they cannot replace the necessary body features.
- Keep the original uncropped photographs; digital zoom can hide or invent edges.
- Do not assume every small yellow ant, large black ant or flying ant belongs to one species.
- Separate a general ant confirmation from a species-level conclusion.
- Do not choose a pesticide or treatment method from colour, kitchen location or a social-media guess alone.
