What Do Termite Workers and Soldiers Look Like?
Termite colonies contain different castes. Workers are usually pale, soft-bodied and wingless. Soldiers may have a darker enlarged head and stronger jaws. Winged reproductive termites are darker and carry two pairs of similar-length wings. Caste appearance varies among termite groups, so a photograph should be paired with the material, location and any shelter tubes or discarded wings.

Which Signs Can Support a Termite Finding?
A live termite specimen or swarmer is the strongest starting point. Other supporting signs include mud-like shelter tubes connecting soil and wood, groups of discarded similar-sized wings, concealed galleries with soil-like material and wood that sounds or feels hollow. These clues must be distinguished from carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, decay and moisture damage.
Where Should You Inspect Without Damaging the Building?
Look visually at accessible foundation edges, service penetrations, timber touching soil, damp lower walls, door and window frames and areas where wings accumulate. Record leaks and drainage problems. Do not cut structural timber, remove finishes, break electrical housings or open concealed cavities solely to obtain a photograph.

Common confusion
Termite, Winged Ant or Another Wood Problem?
Termite swarmers have a broad waist, straighter antennae and similar-length wings. Winged ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae and larger front wings. Carpenter ants excavate galleries but do not eat wood, while beetle larvae can leave holes and frass. Rot, fungal decay and water damage can weaken wood without any termite activity.

Exit holes, larvae or powder-like material can indicate a beetle group rather than termites.
Moisture or decay
Swelling, softness, staining and fungal damage can resemble insect damage and may require building or moisture expertise.

What Evidence Should You Preserve?
Photograph the insect before cleaning, including a top view, side view and scale. Record discarded wings, tubes and damaged material in both close and wide views. If a loose specimen can be collected without opening the structure or creating exposure, keep it in a secure container. Note the date, room, floor and moisture conditions.

Why Termite Evidence Needs Careful Inspection
Visible damage does not reveal how far a concealed problem extends or whether a structural element is safe. Avoid drilling, injecting chemicals or applying an ordinary surface insecticide. Termite methods depend on verified identification, construction, access, moisture and applicable product labels. A building professional may also be needed when timber strength or moisture damage is uncertain.
- Do not cut, pry or drill load-bearing or concealed building elements for identification.
- Do not apply household insecticide into walls, electrical spaces or soil as an improvised termite treatment.
- Treat damaged floors, stairs, ceilings or structural timber as a building-safety question until assessed.
- Repairing a leak can remove a contributing condition but does not prove that insect activity has ended.
- Species examples from other countries do not establish which termite, if any, is present in Georgia.
