What Do Wasps, Hornets and Honey Bees Look Like?
A common wasp pattern is a smooth-bodied, black-and-yellow insect with a narrow waist. European hornets are larger, with a robust wasp body and brown, reddish and yellow tones. Honey bees are generally hairier, golden brown and adapted to collect pollen. These are comparison references only: many species vary, and a clear specimen or specialist review may still be needed.

- Honey bees may forage individually on flowers, form a temporary swarm cluster or occupy a protected cavity.
- Useful clue
- Visible pollen loads and a hairy body support a bee comparison, but do not confirm a colony type from distance.
Which Evidence Helps Separate the Groups?
Use several clues together: body hair, waist shape, size with scale, markings, how the legs hang in flight, nest material and the route used by multiple insects. A temporary cluster of bees, an open paper comb and repeated traffic into a wall cavity are different situations. Do not disturb the insects to expose hidden evidence.
Where Is the Activity Located?
Observe from a safe distance whether insects use a ground opening, an exposed comb, an eave, a wall gap, a tree cavity or flowers. Record the height, access route, nearby doors or walkways and whether children, pets or occupants pass close to it. Do not seal an active opening because insects may redirect into the building.
Ground or low cavity
Repeated rapid traffic into one ground hole can indicate a social-wasp nest; keep people and animals away.
Eaves and exposed structures
An open comb under a protected horizontal surface can support a paper-wasp comparison.
Wall, roof or tree void
Record the entry point from distance; the actual colony may be deeper inside the cavity.
Flowers or food
Individual insects feeding away from a nest may be foragers and do not alone show where a colony is located.
Interpretation boundary
Nest, Swarm or Individual Forager?
A nest is a fixed structure or protected cavity used repeatedly. A honey-bee swarm is a temporary cluster formed while bees search for a new site. A single wasp or bee on flowers, fruit or food is a forager and does not prove a nearby nest. The appropriate response depends on identification, location, activity and risk to people.
Active nest route
Repeated two-way traffic through one opening, defensive behaviour and nest material support a fixed nest finding.
Bee swarm
A compact group of bees resting on a branch or surface may be temporary; keep distance and seek beekeeper guidance.
Foraging insect
One insect feeding on flowers or food may be far from its nest and should not be used to infer colony location.
Never approach an active nest, strike it, block the entrance or use fire, fuel or improvised chemicals.
How Should You Photograph Wasps or Bees?
Use zoom from a safe position. Photograph an individual only when it can be done without approaching the nest, then record a wider view of the entrance or cluster. Include a known object for scale, the height, time, approximate number and the direction of repeated flight. Do not stand in the flight path.

Sting and nest safety
When Should You Keep Away or Seek Medical Help?
Keep people and animals away from an active nest, especially when it is beside an entrance, walkway or occupied area. Anyone with a known serious sting allergy should not approach. Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting or rapidly developing systemic symptoms after a sting require urgent medical attention.
- Do not climb, lean from windows or open building cavities to inspect a nest.
- Do not seal an active entrance or knock down an occupied nest.
- Do not use fire, petrol, boiling liquid or an improvised pesticide mixture.
- Do not assume every bee-like insect should be killed; correct identification changes the response.
